Dear Reader,
I’m obsessed with food. I’m in awe of chefs. I love to go to the market to see what beckons me, and then go home and try to honor it by making it into a worthy meal. I like to serve my fare on hand-me-down plates arranged on an inviting table where I eat slowly, savoring the high notes and learning from the lows. After I am good and full, I sit back and think about the process, try to tease out some meaning and write about it.
I grew up eating marvelous meals concocted by my marvelous mother, and from an early age paired them with extraordinary wines, chosen by my oenophile father. Considering this background, there’s nothing surprising about me devoting so much of my time to the pleasures of food, yet it took me a while to give in to the draw. I am ever curious to know more and I am reverential to the mysteries that persist. In addition to sustenance and inspiration, my love of food and its making has given me another great gift: it’s reminded me to write.
The Lovage is where I make note of my culinary experiences and reflect on their meaning. This place is called “The Lovage” because it’s a pretty word made up of “love” and “age” that refers to a simple herb with a lot of flavor, an herb that was unknown to me not so long ago, but which is now familiar.
If you’ve enjoyed your visit, I am very glad.
